William Shakespeares Tragedies Othello: Othello is a story about a highly respected General serving in the military of Venice and how his friend, who is also a military man, Iago, being deprived a promotion which he felt ought to have been given to him, plots a vicious plan against Othello.

Othello had secretly married Desdemona, daughter of a Senator named Brabantio. Othello was a Moorish general in Venetian military. Iago is upset with Othello for promoting a young officer, Michael Cassio instead of him, while a wealthy man Roderigo is unhappy with Othello as he wanted to marry Desdemona.

Together they plot against Othello. Iago was aware that Othello and Desdemona were planning to elope. He thus tells Roderigo to inform Desdemona’s father about it while he goes to inform Othello that Brabantio knows about their plan and is coming after Othello. Brabantio complains to the Duke of Venice that Othello had charmed his daughter by using witchcraft.

Othello is successful in convincing the Duke and other senators that there was mutual love between him and Desdemona. In the meanwhile the news of Turks invading Cyprus reaches Venice and Othello is asked to leave for Cyprus along with Desdemona, Cassio, Iago, and Emilia.

On reaching Cyprus the troops realize that the Turkish army was killed by a storm. At the celebration, Iago makes Cassio drink a lot. Iago also manages to get Cassio involved in a fight which results in Othello taking away his rank. Cassio is upset with this act of Othello and pleads innocence. Iago persuades Cassio to use Desdemona to get him back his rank.

Iago begins to convince Othello that his wife is having an affair with Cassio and so was defending him. Iago was very intelligently manipulating people. Believing what Iago said Othello asks his wife about the handkerchief he had gifted her.

The handkerchief was lost in the fight could not be given to Othello. The handkerchief was found by Iago and he plants it in Cassio room. Othello was convinced about her infidelity and decides to kill her.

At the end of the story, William Shakespeares Tragedies Othello wakes up his wife from her sleep and accuses her of cheating. Desdemona tells him that Othello was the only man she loved. Othello is not convinced about with she says and suffocates her with a pillow. Within minutes Emilia enters and tells Othello that his wife was not guilty of infidelity.

Emilia realizing Iago’s fault, calls the Governor, who is accompanied by Iago, Cassio and others. On their arrival, Emilia exposes her husband’s plot. Othello says that handkerchief found in Cassio’s room is proof of their affair. Emilia explains to him that it was given to her by Iago, who later on planted it in Cassio’s room.

Realizing that his cover is blown away, Iago attacks Emilia and flees. Othello finally understands that Iago was instigating him against his wife and attacks Iago but does not kill him. William Shakespeares Tragedies Othello, later on, commits suicide. Cassio was then appointed as Governor of Cyprus.
