Mary Queen of Scots

Born in the year 1542 on the 8th of December in Elizabethan era, Mary Queen of Scots was the child of James V and the legal heir to the throne of Scotland. She started her life as the queen of Scotland when she was an infant of six days.

Linlithgow was her birth place and her life has been depicted in many different lights in movies and in literature. She was well educated in France where she reached in 1548. Her marriage in 1558 made her the Queen Consort of France after the death of Henri II in 1559.

At the time when the church tried to get the better of the crown in Scotland Mary Queen of the Scots patiently handled the situation till gradually power returned in to her hands. However, Mary was dangerously reliant on her advisors and counsellors and obediently followed their advice in running her kingdom.

This according to the Pope was reason for her uncertain situation in the country as he had observed during his trip to Scotland in 1562. Mary's bad judgment of character compelled her to marry Lord Darnley who had his eyes on her queendom.

This infuriated the Protestants who rebelled and were supported by Queen Elizabeth. However, Mary muted all protests and went ahead with the wedding with her first cousin. She did invite considerable danger with such activities. Soon her loving husband changed colours and plotted successfully against her and made her his prisoner.

However, once again Mary managed to defeat her enemies and planned to murder Darnley which took shape in February 1567. The earl of Bothwell was tried and acquitted for the murder after this in April that year. However, people continued to suspect Mary for the death of her husband.

On her return after a visit to her son Mary was abducted and raped by Bothwell and his men in April 1567. By now the Lords of Scotland had turned against her and imprisoned her at Edinburgh on the island in Loch Leven. However, even this time Mary managed a narrow escape from her prison by 1568 and made her way to England.

In England she was made prisoner once again by Elizabeth and preparations for a trial were being made. It was expected that Queen Elizabeth would have helped the Scottish Queen in distress but it was at this crucial juncture that Mary's plans to rule on England became apparent and she lost all support from the English Queen as well.

Mary Queen of Scots was now tried in a court led by Bromley, for treason. It was here that Mary was found guilty of treason and a death sentence was passed against her. After much contemplation and hesitation for fear of adverse political consequences, Elizabeth finally signed the warrant. Mary was finally executed on the 8th of February 1587 and was buried in France.
